Saint-Gobain's CertainTeed operation in Acton is being transformed into Canada's leading vinyl siding manufacturing site, and its Automation Engineer leads and supports the automation, process control, and continuous improvement work behind that modernization. The role applies expertise in automation systems, electrical controls, and process optimization to World Class Manufacturing projects that improve reliability, reduce process variation, and lift production performance.
The day-to-day scope covers designing, implementing, troubleshooting, and optimizing automation and control systems — PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, VFDs, and instrumentation — with hands-on programming and troubleshooting on Rockwell Automation platforms, specifically RSLogix 5000 and Studio 5000. The engineer provides technical leadership for automation projects and plant initiatives, plans, schedules, and executes automation and maintenance projects including capital expenditures, develops business cases and cost-benefit analyses for improvement ideas, and maintains and upgrades the plant's electrical distribution, data networks, and automation systems to prevent technical obsolescence. Work orders and priorities are managed in SAP.
Collaboration runs across production, maintenance, and engineering to resolve process issues and improve equipment reliability, and includes creating standard operating procedures and work instructions and training operators and maintenance personnel. Saint-Gobain asks for a bachelor's degree in electrical, automation, mechatronics, or a related discipline, a P.Eng. designation, and at least five years of applied experience in electrical, instrumentation and controls, and PLC work.
